THE WORLDWIDE USE OF HDPE DRAINAGE PIPE

Since the late 1970’s, high density polyethylene (HDPE) has increasingly been used as a liner to prevent seepage of leachate from municipal and industrial liquid and soil waste disposal sites because of its resistance to chemical attack, flexibility and ease with which it can be welded.

An underdrain system is often used between the solid waste and underlying synthetic or natural clay liner to reduce the fluid pressure on the liner. Slotted or perforated HDPE pipe has many advantages over PVC pipe because its flexibility allows it to deform both vertically and horizontally to accommodate foundation settlement without damage.

This presentation gives an overview of the design of underdrain systems with case histories of successful applications where HDPE drainage pipes were used in harsh environmental and loading conditions.
